The Crush Letter No 212: Postcards from Past Fall Travels

. 6 min read

The Crush Letter brings love to your inbox weekly on Saturdays. To make you, your weekend — and sometimes even your love life — more compelling. Hell yes, sign me up.

Hello Crush,

Thanks for being here in the glorious waning days of summer.

I have spent the last 10+ days shuffling between various spots throughout New England as a guest in the homes of various good friends. I left my computer behind at the start of my trek when I made an early departure after a night with too much wine. Eventually I shuffled back to get it, which prompted an unplanned, repeat stay with the friends where I began my journey. That “floating around feeling” encapsulates what has been my August mood.

One of my hosts, Dina, told me that last summer she adopted an “August Mindset“ that she’s sticking with. It‘s pretty inchoate still, but it involves keeping everything loose — not taking on any obligations (social or otherwise), not holding anyone accountable to being on time (or even showing up) and of course, the obvious, not agreeing to any Friday work calls. It seems like it’s a lot of just sort of keeping a large stack of clean sheets and towels in the guest rooms and making homemade pizza in her outside grill with a big salad and just seeing who wanders in.

Lucky me, I wandered in a few times this summer, along with other friends and members of her close and extended family.

While I took my unintended break from you and The CRUSH Letter last Saturday I hope that you spent the time outside, soaking up time with friends and family, not to mention the last days of summer with your own August Mindset.

I have loved this summer, but I am ready for fall. For over a decade (since my late husband’s death) I have spent the summers ‘staying put’ in one ‘chill’ place for the entirety of July and August, followed by a big fall trip (or trips). September and October are the perfect months for travel to my mind, with weather in so many parts of the world that is easy and comfortable to move around in. Some years, I have done multiple big trips. In the fall of 2021 I hiked the Dolomites in Italy, then flew to Tangier for a private home & gardens tour. Then last October I went from Saint Tropez to Porto, Portugal, hiked the Camino through Spain, then spent a couple nights in Madrid.

In order to hang near my aging parents this summer I have spent it bopping around New England, with a couple impromptu trips to New York City. I’ll continue that through the fall, so no big trips planned.

Knowing I’ll stay local prompted me to take a spin through snaps from my fall trips over the last decade. Here are postcards from some of my most memorable ones.

Rainy Camino trek, October 2024
Portugal, October 2022
Sydney, October 2021
Venice September 2021
Tangier, Morocco September 2021
Hiking the Dolomites, Italy September 2021
Jackson Hole late October 2019 (yes, look at the snow!)
Moroccan Sahara, October 2016
Rome September 2018
Kyoto October 2016

We’ll be back after Labor Day. In the meantime, we will be doing a much needed upgrade and maintenance to our newsletter and site. I will also be writing to you then about moving to paid subscriptions. As I‘ll explain, it’s time. I started The CRUSH Letter on a whim during COVID and it has become more than a passion project — I, and the other writers I pay to contribute stories — are committed to it, and to sending you a thoughtful, fun, engaging Letter each week.

Enjoy the lazy end of August, CRUSHes. And if you take some shots of your fall trip and want to share a postcard with us, send them to me at Dish@PrimeCrush.com. We’d love to see them.
